PERSONAL INTEGRATION

What is Personal Integration?

Personal integration refers to the inner state of being in which there is no conflict, struggle, or resistance. Our usual daily existence consists of many competing desires and demands that leave us split inside about how best to approach situations without understanding what is really driving our decisions and behaviors. We experience this fragmentation in numerous ways which include feelings of insecurity, guilt, shame, fear, anger, apathy, boredom, envy, jealousy, and resentment. We may also experience low energy and low mood or a heightened sense of anxiety and tension. Integration work looks at the source of inner conflict and the splits inside to allow for a different kind of existence altogether.

What is My Inner State of Being?

Your inner state of being refers to your inner environment which includes mood, attitude, feelings, and thoughts.

We often overlook the value of maintaining our inner state as we become absorbed by the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges.  As a result, many of the negative emotions such as anger, fear, apathy, and depression arise.  They are reminders that possibly the most valuable thing we have is our inner state of being.

This inner state is something that one feels subject to but seldom in control of. However, there is much you can do to experience an inner state of your choice throughout the day regardless of situations and circumstances. For example, you can choose to be the calm within the storm so that you respond with freedom and creativity to life’s demands and challenges. In other words, you can choose how you feel inside and how you express yourself outwardly. This is done, not  artificially, but rather from a place of impeccable authenticity with determination and power.

ABOUT ME

Marc Adams, LCSW, MBA

I believe our inner state of being, our inner feeling tone, from which we experience all things through the day, every day, is our most valuable attribute.  It is the real environment we live in more than any outer environment we inhabit, so it is well worth paying attention to and taking care of all the time. I discovered at a young age that there is a lot in the outer world I can’t change or control, so I focused on the inner world. I realized my perceptions of things were leading to a lot of unpleasant noise inside. Ever since this initial discovery, I have been exploring and experimenting with ways to re-evaluate old conclusions and assumptions in order to see things a bit more accurately and noticed a decided change in inner feeling and attitude in the process. I believe this discovery process has been described in certain texts as “The Great Journey”, and it is available to any of us who feel drawn to this labor of love.

As you can see, I've have always been attracted to learning new ways of seeing and approaching life's many situations and challenges. I grew up with a father who was a minister which provided access to deep psychological material and spiritual traditions from a very early age. I continued to be exposed to new perspectives by immersing himself into many fields of study, philosophies, different cultures, and a variety of living and work environments including living abroad. These experiences provided a backdrop towards developing  particular areas of interest including Jungian psychology, Sufi traditions, Non-duality and Fourth Way teachings. Many of the teachings derive from various sources including C.G. Jung, M. Nicoll, B. Gibson, G.I. Gurdjieff, I. Shah, J. Krishnamurti, R. Spira among others. These new perspectives served as portals to opening a new way of being and experiencing.

In terms of the professional journey, my vocation included working in the volatile banking industry for over 28 years before acquiring a psychotherapy license while navigating major life transitions. I also dedicated years to learning Flamenco guitar, dancing Argentine tango, and intensive study abroad programs to gain fluency in multiple languages. One key element that has remained constant throughout the years has been a magnetic attraction to inner work and, ultimately, the desire to partner with others in facilitating their journey to experience new perspectives and new ways of being.

Additionally, I have a private practice in Existential Counseling, I am co-founder of Creative Depth, an organization dedicated to supporting clinicians in providing greater depth and meaning to the therapeutic process, and co-founder of Transformational Tango which brings more conscious awareness to the inner dynamics that unfold during Argentine tango. I also serves as a board member of Charlotte Friends of Jung non-profit organization.

Statements to Consider

  • EVERYTHING has value.
  • Life has only ONE purpose:  That I become a conscious, integrated whole.  Life is teaching the awareness to be awake.
  • ALL discomfort is a signal that I’m operating from a conditioned idea or a misconception.
  • WHENEVER I make anything important, I feel anxious.
  • I CAN BE in charge of my Inner State of Being regardless of circumstances and anything I read in social media.
  • EVERY TIME I am angry at someone or something, I am hurting myself.
  • I already have one of the greatest gifts there is - I DON’T KNOW the future outcome of things.
  • EVERYTHING I claim as mine possesses me.
  • I am CONSTANTLY subject to suggestions, narratives, and stories that shape my perceptions whether I know it or not.
